Word Order (V2)

The verb is always the second element

The conjugated verb is always the second element

In a main clause, one element comes before the verb — no more, no less.

💬 Examples
Jag dricker kaffe.
I drink coffee.
📝 subject (1) – verb (2) – object
Idag dricker jag kaffe.
Today I drink coffee.
📝 time adverb (1) – verb (2) – subject (3)
Inversion: subject follows verb after a fronted element

If anything other than the subject opens the clause, the subject moves after the verb.

📊 V2 word order
Opening element Verb pos. Subject pos. Example
subject 2 1 Jag dricker kaffe.
time adverb 2 3 Idag dricker jag kaffe.
place phrase 2 3 I parken sitter hon.
object (topicalized) 2 3 Det gillar jag.
💬 Examples
Igår åt jag lunch.
Yesterday I ate lunch.
📝 igår (1) – åt (2) – jag (3) = inversion
I Stockholm bor hon.
In Stockholm she lives.
📝 place phrase (1) – bor (2) – hon (3)
Extra verbs (infinitive, participle) go to the end

The main verb stays second; other verb parts cluster at the end.

I want to eat pizza.
📝 vill (2nd) – äta at the end
Han har inte sovit.
He has not slept.
📝 har (2nd) – sovit at the end
